Bio

Welcome to The Celtic Dog – a blog covering life with our canine companions, training issues, and issues of note regarding our four-footed friends.

So, for the questions I’m sure you’ll be asking…

Who are you?

My name is Jay and I am, among many other things, a dog trainer and observer of canine behavior. I am a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers, a former member of the Animal Behavior Society, and am currently actively working as a trainer for a number of clients. I got my start working in an animal shelter doing anything and everything that was handed to me and continued applying my studies in the canine behavior and training fields to real-life situations.

I do not teach group classes – I prefer to do one-on-one consultations so that I can spend as much time with the owner and dog as possible.

Why the blog?

Recent events in my life made me realize that no dog (or owner, for that matter) experiences life in a vacuum and the problems and issues that arise for one are, often, the same problems and issues experienced by any number of people. I see this blog as the opportunity to post and discuss particular issues that are relatively common (and, sometimes, not so common) in the hope that it aids someone out there who might otherwise be frustrated over their pet’s behavior.

I’d also like this blog to serve as a resource for other information, links, and assistance for people who may have more serious issues and have hit a wall in terms of knowing “what to do next”.

So how are questions submitted?

If you have a question pertaining to your dog’s behavior, please send it to:

thecelticdog[at]gmail[dot]com

Please attempt to include as much information regarding your dog(s) and the situation as possible. The following are examples of information that helps in understanding the problems and issues being addressed:

* age, breed and size of dog
* how long you’ve owned the dog
* if the dog is spayed/neutered (and when this was done)
* any medical issues
* members of household (age and sex, in particular)
* dog’s activity level and diet
* when issue was first noticed
* any other facts you may think are pertinent.

Also, please indicate (i) that you are contacting me through this blog (it helps me to keep track of everything) and (ii) if you wish for your name to be used in the posting of the question, or if you’d prefer to remain anonymous.

I’ll go through the questions and post those that seem to be addressing more common issues. I’ll also attempt to answer as many as possible, or at least provide you with resources in your area to address your question.

How often will the blog be updated?

The only good answer to this is “as often as possible.” I’ll do what I can to get things up in a timely manner.

What if I have a serious issue with my dog and I need help right away?

If you have immediate issues that involve possible physical harm, please contact your veterinarian for a reference to a local canine behaviorist.

Living with you pet and training your pet should be an experience you both enjoy... A fun day with your dog... It just doesn't get any better.
